Wind, rain, hail and snow sweep the closed park of the Tour Auto at the foot of the city walls before the start of the second stage long of 540 kilometers. Leaving Saint Malo the competitors take the direction of Frehel before heading south through the hedgerows, forests and Breton moors. On the program of this day three events timed on closed roads, the first one takes the course of the famous race of coast of Saint Gouéno. Competed in intermittent snow and rain, this event is the scene of several road trips. SMITH / COTTINGHAM won the fastest time in HCV, RODDARO / ANTONACCI (Porsche 911 2,3L) in G1 G2 and JOHN OF B. / SIBEL in H1 H2 I. DUPARD / SAUSSEREAU climb on the first step in regularity.
This first difficulty was overcome and the crews headed for LOCUNOLE under the red sun, the day ahead, and presented themselves at the start of the second timed event of the morning “les roches du diable”. This name does not hide anything from the tormented and sinuous profile on narrow road of the course, sometimes remained wet under the wood of the vagaries of the weather of the beginning of the day. Here again some competitors are trapped and see their dream of reaching Biarritz fly away. The departure of some competitors is given by a group of children sitting on the wall of the church which, with throat extended, counts the last 10 seconds. Amused by this improvised animation, some copilots lowered their window and encouraged by hand the count of the children.
The CARON / GIRAUDET duo (Shelby Cobra 289) takes advantage of SMITH / COTTINGHAM in HCV, RODDARO / ANTONACCI (Porsche 911 2.3L) achieve the best time in G1 G2, SIRGUE / CARRIERE (De Tomaso Pantéra) imitate them H1 H2 I. Regularly the OXENFORD / CELADA crew (Ferrari 275 GTB2) is the most skilled.
The survivors of these first two events head south for the lunch break on the peninsula of Port Louis, citadel witness of the Breton history of the 16th and 17th century. Rochefort en Terre serves as the framework for the third event of the day, whose route, made up of small roads, does not leave to the competitors, time to admire the South Breton landscape.
SMITH / COTTINGHAM won the fastest time in the HCV, RODDARDO / ANTONACCI in G1 G2 and LECOURT / NARAC (Porsche 911 RSR 2.8L) in H1 H2 I. Regularly the women’s duo HOUSSEAU / PICCININ MOMMEZ on Ferrari Dino 246GT wins This fifth time trial.
The caravan then takes the direction of Haute Goulaine in the South East of Nantes, the end of this second stage. The Château de Goulaine, a late medieval building, contains a collection of pieces recounting the history of the LU biscuit factory. Its park is used as a framework for the closed park of this stage.
